Rob ZL4ROB decided to give his fan dipole a bit of TLC. So what better place to lay it out, than a footpath? Given the footpath in question is hardly a major pedestrian highway and the surrounding foliage afforded cover from the direct sun, it wasn’t a bad choice of a place to stretch out the radiators.
The original wire had succumbed to weather and abrasion and so Rob produced what appeared to be some 4mm heavy stranded “earth” cable. The original wire was fine stranded and as well as oxidising where the insulation had failed, it appeared not to have the mechanical robustness of the heavier stranded type. It has been said that “many hands make light work”. In our experience, we have observed a slight variation: “many hands puzzle as to why light won’t work”. Still in this case, it was “many hands help to get the wires threaded through the separators” (actually quite light work…1). Having replaced the wire runs, Rob left the terminating and tuning for later – after all it was nearly coffee time.
The green insulation now qualifies Rob’s antenna as a Green Antenna on the Air.
A few pics of the “pullers” helping out…
